The True World
When we lived in New York and Los Angeles, we used to make frequent trips to Albuquerque to visit my mom. Bonnie especially loved the landscape, and felt the southwest desert was her spiritual home. On one trip, we saw a small etching in an Albuquerque gallery that charmed us completely: a desert vista framed by an ornate Spanish colonial doorway, with coyotes. These were not your typical coyotes howling on their haunches. These coyotes had wings and stood gracefully on their hind legs, smiling like baroque putti. Underneath were the words, "Angels Guard A Gateway To The True World". We bought it on the spot, and looked at that picture every day for years, until we walked through that gateway ourselves into our desert home. Now we welcome everyone to the True World.

From the I-10, take Route 62 North 30 miles to Joshua Tree. Look for the Starlight Building on the North side of the street (covered in rusted steel), corner of Veterans Way.
Secret Scenic Route from Las Vegas (3 hour drive from McCarran Airport):
If you're traveling between Las Vegas and the coast (or Palm Springs), leave the traffic behind and experience the grandeur of the Mojave National Preserve. From Las Vegas, exit the I-15 just over the California line at Nipton Rd.
-Turn left at Nipton Rd for 3.5 miles
-Turn right at Ivanpah Rd for 3 miles
-Turn right at Morning Star Mine Rd for 15 miles to Cima
-Continue on Kelso Cima Rd for 19 miles to Kelso
-At the historic Kelso Depot, turn left at Kelbaker Rd for 34 miles. Kelbaker will cross under I-40
-Turn right at National Trails Hwy (old Route 66) for 6.5 miles
-Turn left at Amboy Rd (toward Twentynine Palms) for 45 miles
-Turn left at the traffic light on Adobe Rd for 2 miles
-Turn right at Route 62/Twentynine Palms Hwy. Continue for 22 miles till you reach Joshua Tree. The gallery is on the right.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to gas up before leaving I-15 - there are no services in the Preserve. If you pack a lunch, there are picnic tables at the Kelso Depot, which also houses a small railroad musem. Definitely worth a visit!
